Never heard of a third party defragger causing any troubles for any system. As a matter of fact compaired to the standard crap one it comes with it isn’t even close as to which one I will use. My defrag takes 30 seconds, does yours? Anyway…
Try this and yes it’s free. Over time your registry, how the computer thinks, gets full of useless clutter from adding and removing programs and just use. This program fixes those issues and does quite a bit more too. My startup time for my laptop is down to 50 seconds… as in time from hitting the power button to fully loaded counting the time it takes me to type in the password.

For updates/upgrades and other things, go directly to Dell @ http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/product_support/product_support_central?c=us&l=en&s=gen
As for cleanup/speedup, it can be as simple as using the built-in "Disk Cleanup" and "Disk Defragmenter" Utilities already available in Windows ( Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools )
HINT: You SHOULD use BOTH but start Disk Cleanup first !
Of course, sometimes it needs the BIG cleanup and here is my technique on how to do a TOTAL non-destructive cleanup: a few tricks (and associated free programs) I use when helping friends with problems.
1) The Java Runtime Environment causes issues, you should use a free program I use myself called JavaRa to get the latest JRE and remove older versions. This will ensure the security of your computer and a little extra space on your hard disk. Find more information here: http://raproducts.org/javara.html and the download link here: http://raproducts.org/ ( Currently, JavaRa supports Windows Vista without UAC so if you have Vista and are not comfortable temporarily disabling it, don’t use JavaRa )
2) Flush every single possible accumulated browsing junk in ALL your browsers (you should always delete these from time to time).
Method One (now): In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then Delete Browsing History and in the box, click the Delete all button (bottom left) and Yes.
In Firefox, go to tools, clear private data, make sure all boxes are checked and then click on the clear private data now button.
Method Two (in the future – about every two weeks for normal use of the internet – every week for heavy use):
In Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then click Delete Browsing History and in the box that opens, do the following steps (in order)
1) click the button near Temporary Internet Files, click Yes and wait for the box that opens to close.
2) click the button near History, click Yes and wait for the box that opens to close.
Finally, click the close button (bottom right) to finish.
In Firefox, Go to tools, clear private data and uncheck all except Browsing History, Cache and Authenticated Sessions boxes and then click on the clear private data now button.
Note: Close your browser ( This is good for Internet Explorer and Firefox ) when you’re done to clear cookies that are still in memory.
For older versions of the same programs or for other browsers, check their help files for guidance on doing the cleanup.
3) Turn off the restore point utility.
Here is a guide for Vista: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/9f6d755a-74bb-4a7d-a625-d762dd8e79e51033.mspx
4) Install a free cleaner called Glary Utilities ( http://www.glaryutilities.com/gu.html ) to remove Windows junk files, registry orphans and/or remnants of installs/uninstalls (there is always some).
5) Defragment your drive with your defragmenter.
6) Turn system restore back on. ( See part 3 again )
( A word of caution, with programs and utilities this powerful, be sure to read all instructions and help files completely so that you apply fixes correctly the first time ! )
NOTE: Finish by making sure to visit the support site, download and install EVERY latest driver for your Vista OS for a better overall computing experience.
Hope this helps
id re-install Xp (if you had it before) as its an old computer itl make a diference and maybe defrag your hard drive usually scanning your computer slows it down alot if you using it at the time so make sure its not just a small schoolboy error like that, as for the visuals right click on your desktop and go to personalize and then from there proceed with making it look cool lol its pretty straight forward hope ive helped a lil bit!
run %temp% to see all your temp files, get rif of them it will help. right click on desktop, choose personalize, then themes. you can change colors there.
1.look at thehowtogeek website, there are lots of graphics tweaks to turn off transparency etc that will help your computer to cope better with vista.
2. replace vista with xp? this makes a BIG difference.
3. there are almost limitless ways of changing the look of it, they will tend to slow you down even more though- have a search for "featured desktops" on lifehacker.com and get artwork and customisation for free from deviantart.
4. open it up and clean out the fan; you may find tips about this on instructibles or howtogeek.
go to –
You could defrag your hard drive.
The link is how to =)
p.s : never use a third party program to do this for you.
There are numerous ways you can speed up your computer. One is to find out how much RAM is currently on your computer; it should be at least 2 GB. If you have less then that, then you will need to purchase some RAM.
Performing periodic maintenance will ensure that your computer is running as it should. This means using the utilities that Microsoft provides you with, which are Disk Cleanup and Defrag.
Limiting the number of background programs will most definitely boot your speed. Go to the start menu, search for Run and launch the application. Run "msconfig" (without quotation marks) and look under startup; uncheck any unnecessary programs like, quicktime, itunes, aim, and so forth.
Turn down the eye candy. The beautiful look of Aero comes with a price; it eats up your precious resources, leaving you with less to work with.
Organizing your desktop application will also boost your computers speed a little. Rather than having hundreds of icons in your desktop, put them in folders where they will be out of sight. The less you see, the less your computer will have to load.
***************************
Yes you can continue to use the computer while defragging, but it will slow down the process and you will notice a slower performance as well.
