It is likely that your RAM is damaged. When you rebot your computer there will be a error message saying on the start up screen (I am talking abou the very first screen which appears when you start your PC) "Memory Test Failed" or "Could not read Memory" as you've mentioned. In that case you need to change the RAM before you re-install Windows XP. FYI there is nothing wrong with Window XP.

In order to re-confirm if the RAM is having problem you can go to Control Panel>System and view what is the RAM size (if you could remeber what was the RAM size before). If you find the RAM size have decreased then is most likely that one of your RAM is damaged.

Hope this helps!

Sounds to me like the memory itself may be going bad. It happens. Not very often but it happens.
