i dont know how to do it manually but i use CCleaner which is good.
it has a part specifically designed to search your pc for missing, broken and bad registry and fix it. it worked for me, give it a go.

I recommend you UNIBLUE’S REGISTRY BOOSTER ( MICROSOFT CERTIFIED SOFTWARE ). It cleans registry and speeds up your pc. I using it for years.
Its good if u purchase it. before that u can also get trial version from the UNIBLUE site.

I do not think there is any registry cleaning/fixing application that solves any real problem. Even it is not possible to make something like that. You can backup your registry and restore when needed. No additional software is needed. Search for how backup and restore registry.
You can do it manually by going onto a program called REGEDIT.EXE (type it into run) and then go and remove all the bad files that are in there.
I’ve never heard of Winferno but it doesn’t sound to friendly. I use Ccleaner which u can get at http://www.ccleaner.com and RegAce which you can get at http://www.regace.com
