Could be a problem, legal junk when dealing with Windows (anything after SP3) NT kernel is copyright protected stuff. One owner. One box per owner. Unless you have the #### codes that are from the original install CD or Network install, gets real messy.
Sure, backups are a great idea, have been for forty years now. Best way to clean up a bugged out system, (and they all get sloppy or toasted) is to do a clean install from the backup set. Then restore all the data that runs or works with that OS.
You need to say if it is the original box that that copy of XP was shipped with. Are you the original non-owner of that XP.Junk like that, is probablly easier to just download or have Ubuntu shipped and run a free OS that is free of Blue Ray and other anti pirate junk that is actually fancy trojans and other viri that 'phone-home' to the mother ship in Redmond at every boot.
If you can call Microsoft and tell them the ###s and the UID and they match , then yes, you may be able to use a backup to restore a defunct system.
Get Ubuntu, it is free, built like a tank with a jet engine.
Or pay for another USER license.
