First, right-click on "My Documents", select Properties, the General tab, and check the disk space usage. If it’s large, then check for videos, music, etc. as these files are very large.
If it’s small, then Windows XP itself is taking up the space. The major sources are Restore Points and Service Packs.Since both are "safety" (fallback) services, you need to decide which you need more; the ability to rollback in the event of a problem, or the disk space.
You can find information on removing old Service Pack files here:

You can find information on removing restore files here (scroll down to find the section on restore files):

disk clean-up > more options tab > delete system restore points.
You can also remove system restore by right clicking My Computer going to properties. Then click on the system restore tab. Uncheck the turn off system restore on all drive box. This is more then likely where the extra space is being taken up. XP should be around 4 to 5 gigs. Plus whatever the updates take up.
Don’t even worry about it unless you have a tiny hard drive. 8 86 gb is nothing these days The windows folder alone is about 4gb. Most people use less than 40gb of their hard drives when they have a lot of garbage on their systems. I have about a hundred audio books on one of my hard drives and that’s only 45GB.
That’s about right for windows XP.
I think that the least amount I’ve seen XP use is around 6GB or so. Even though the minimum sys req’s say 1.5GB.
There are file in the Windows directory that can be deleted. The folder names are in blue and are all Un-install information for windows service packs and updates. BUT,,, if you delete these files and you later have a problem with a update or service pack, you will NOT be able to uninstall it.
If you are that low on disk space, you may need to think about getting another hard drive to add space.
