start>program>accessories>system tools>disc clean up (this will take all old files you never use and delete them to clear up space on your hard drive( i do it all the time, you don’t notice anything missing it deletes temp internet files and stuff like that, not important things)
you can also do:
start>program>accessories>system tools>disc defrag
that will take all you current files and compress them so they take up less room on your hard drive. You can do it a few times to get the best results. do it when you’re not on the computer.
hope it helps

This is a Malware Removal guide for XP Home or XP Pro:
Enable viewing of hidden files, system files and file extensions
Some programs hide themselves by making their files invisible in normal Windows settings.
Not doing this would allow file extensions commonly used by trojans and spyware to be hidden, for example a file ending in .exe or dll making manually
finding it, if needed, difficult to impossible. To do this go to My Documents and click on the Tools menu and then click on folder options. Click the "VIEW"
tab and select "Show hidden files" and click OK.
