I run CCleaner a lot... it's not bad just only use the file cleanup, not the registry cleaning. Cleaning the registry can be risky so I try to avoid it.

Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.

Try this first before you resort to cleaning your registry. Programs like ccleaner are pretty good and user friendly though. I would not be nervous about using it.

She is right, registry cleaning is dangerous but not to an extent your windows will stop working (as long as you don't do it manually) But certain programs can stop working, without too much improvement.

Best to see what maybe slowing your computer down.
For example things that loadup into your startup memmory
Go to start --> run --> (type) msconfig
Now go to startup
Look at all the items,
Uncheck the programs with the exception of Rundll32, and your virus scanner. That will give you a signicant boost. Remember when you uncheck them they will no longer run on startup and won't be in your system tray. To use them you have to start them manually.

The reason it improves your speed is the simple fact they run in the background and use up your system memmory.
Don't touch any other tabs.

Now if you use firefox, after some time it uses up alot of memmory also which you have to reset. Get the latest version of firefox 3 beta 2.

Basically there are few programs, after some time it starts eating up more memmory.

Its a good idea to reformat you computer time to time (say once in 6 months or once a year), it clears everything and makes your PC back to speed. Just install what you need.
