Its a pretty useless file.. I’d delete it altogether if I were you
it sets the computer up to use the programs you have on it when you boot up the machine… sets defaults and stuff like that. If you delete a program that is referenced there, it may still set up defaults for it. Also some spyware puts stuff in the registry.
It is an integral part of the Windows operating system. It stores vital information about all of the programs installed into windows. Don’t mess with it. If you want to, run the cleaner but your better off to just reinstall windows on a fresh harddrive if it is acting up.
It’s where the magic happens…
If your computer was a human being, the registry would be the central nervous system. It is related to and used by just about every program on your computer and by your operating system. From the moment you boot your computer until you shut it down, the registry is being used. Much of Windows start-up time is spent reading and checking the registry, and almost all of the shut-down time is spent writing information to the registry so your next start-up goes smoothly.
Having said all of that, most people can use their computer every day and never mess with the registry. Windows XP does a pretty good job keeping things under control. However, there are times when editing the registry might be the only way to solve a problem.
CAUTION: Editing the wrong registry entry could cause your computer to crash. The registry is that important and that powerful.
Many third party software are available to help "clean" the registry by removing unneeded registry entries. This link will give you an overview of what the registry is and some links to compare registry cleaners.

The registry is a one stop location to find everything on your computer. Windows made the registry so it could be a road map for the computer so it has an easier time finding files and settings. Cleaning your registry would help speed up your computer as well as it’s boot and shutdown times. Useless file indeed!
