Generally, the registry isn't the problem. If you have the original system CD, run the system file verification first to get any missing or corrupted system files replaced. It's under Accessories/System Tools/System Information. Disk cleanup and defrag also will help. The best utility I have found for seeing what really starts when you boot is called AutoRuns. It was written by SysInternals and is on the Microsoft web site.
