Are they actually effective/necessary? I've never used one, and wonder if it's all hype.

it works , and it can only repair the registry if the physical memory is not damage or else it come out more than wanted time every now and then,
99% windows programs suck wait sorry 100% of the time although i am impressed with xp it can actually stay stable for 2 hours its amazing
just don't try it because is infected your system, i try it before, and infected my system and i reinstall new windows.
just don't try any program like this.
