What on your desktop is messed up? CCleaner is as good a program as the ones you pay $40 for. I use PC Tools Registry Mechanic( it costs $30) and CCleaner 3-4 times a week(for a couple of years) Neither program will hurt your computer. Regcure is rated very high, but is totally worthless!
ccleaner is the best, and I’ve never ever heard of an issue like your’s after years of using it on many machines.
I can only recommend Webroot’s Window’s Washer which is not free as an alternative.

google spybot is the best
i strongly recommend tune-up utilities 2009, it does an amazing job on cleaning, and repairing software problems, download the full version trial for a complete 30 days~
I use a moistened cloth, no soap or detergents, and nothing abrasive.
