I had the same question, and was given this website. It is free too.
Take it to a reputable computer shop and have them clean the hard drive and all if you wish.
For just dust, I still would.
Manually, with some automated help!
I’d suggest the following… (If not talking about PC then use a mac or whatever equivalent)
- Use Add/Remove programs to get rid of anything you don’t use anymore (or never used).
- Check your Startup Folder in your Start Menu, get rid of crap you don’t want running every time you start up.
- Check HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and get rid of some more crap (If you aren’t sure about anything, don’t delete it!)
- Check HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run too
- Go INTO the Windows\Prefetch folder and delete everything inside (Don’t delete the folder itself)
- For God’s sake, organise the start menu (Doesn’t speed things up, but it makes it look soooo much better)
- Run CCleaner, RegCleaner or some equivalent.
- Get rid of all but the standard browser toolbars
- Finally… Get rid of iTunes!! – or anything made by Apple (I’ll get letters about this, but every screwed up laptop I’ve had to sort had iTunes on it!)
- Probably best to run CCleaner (or whatever) again after that, ’cause I don’t trust it to remove properly
- Run a good Defrag program
To be responsible, I should probably say "Do a backup before you do anything"… but do what you wish!
