I turn mine upside down outside and tap out all of the dust, clean it off with an air blaster, and if something sticky got in there, you can either wipe the thing down with an alcohol soaked tissue or if you’re really into a heavy duty cleaning, you can remove the keys and really wipe it down.
Can of compressed air works best.
If you’ve spilled something sticky on your keyboard, you can use cleaning wipes to get that off. As long as you don’t use something wet, anything should work.

The simple answer of course, is to take all steps not to get it dirty in the first place…but…
I personally cover mine everytime I leave it awhile. I also `blow` the dust away frequently so that is does not get a chance to get `grimed in` (as they used to say).
