I’ve had a similar problem on a couple of PC’s. This update is in need of a fix. First off, remove any extra toolbars you may have installed. Secondly turn off the pop-up and phishing filters on IE7. Now check to see if that helped. I’ve noticed in some cases certain photo software that loads at startup will really slow things down with this update. I had 2 PC’s that took the update with no problem. A 3rd PC had to be cleaned as noted above and the 4th, I simply removed the update. One last thing… If you have Vista you better have at least 1 gig of ram. It is a ram hog and any extra overhead will slow things down. Good Luck !!!
Why wait?

Chances are your computer slowed down because KB 931768 is a needed update for Visual® Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 (which is a tool for program developers.)

I doubt you have Visual® Studio on your computer. So even though you can download the "fix", if there’s nothing to fix it spends a lot of time searching for that non-existent Visual® Studio. And that slows down your computer. It has nothing to do with your registry and most people can go forever without using a registry cleaner.

But if you feel you absolutely must have a registry cleaner, I can recommend a free tool called ccleaner. I’ve used it on and off for about 2 years with never a problem. If you decide to use it, follow the prompts to make a backup of your registry and take the time to read the quick tour and help & support sections.

don’t know why your machine slows down, but if you check the web lots of people are having trouble with IE7 once they’ve put this patch on.
however in most cases the problem manifests itself as IE7 not running at all: instead it comes up with a dialog to save your default homepage as a file, or cancel. in either case IE just closes straight afterwards.
typically: "navcand from ieframe.dll" although in my case its "Firefox Document from uk.yahoo.com".
looks like removal of this patch is the only answer for those affected. hopefully MS will sort out their cock-up reasonably quickly and release a fix to the patch.
