I would just suggest you back up the files and then reformat it. You should always back up, even after 4 days of use. This is a device that allows you to do so:

You connect the old hard drive to this device, and then the device to a another computer or laptop via USB. You would then be able to access all the files on it.
Best of luck!
If the restore partition is still there, which it should be, I would restore factory settings and start again.
There may be an option from within Windows, not sure as normally I restore my sister`s HP outside of Windows by pressing F11 immediately at start up.
If you manage to do this, just install AVG free immediately you`re up and running, this definitely will do no harm to your system.
Download your other programs one at a time, and run for a while before downloading any more to see if one of them is causing a problem.
Having said this I would try to do a check disk first – computer – right click C drive – properties – tools – check now.
You will have to do a restart before it will check.
If it doesn`t do the check or if it doesn`t find or remove any errors, or unless it tells you there are no errors I would ask for a refund.
Filehippo is a good safe site for downloading freeware.
EDIT.
Sorry I just read the end of your question and see you`ve already tried to schedule a disk check, in that case I would try the F 11 for restore and if that doesn`t sort it ask for a refund.
Actually a restore should sort it because it will load the original uncorrupted files.
