My OS is Vista Ultimate and I'm also using a Toshiba Laptop. I sometimes have this problem amongst others, and I too am no maestro with computers either. These problems seem to come and go without warning. Incidental it also is within the approx last two months ? I'm guessing there's a co-relation with Microsoft's scheduled on-line upgrading of Vista, which officially is due now "March" I think its called SP1 or something like that. This upgrading is a direct response to some of the negative operations of Vista. Which do not make for pleasant reading, especially when you happen to own one.

the same thing happens to me,the only thing you can do is call technical support, they will give you the correct # to call if you bought your pc in a retail store, the # is on the back of your pc. you could restore to a earlier date and time but it will just eventually happen again, call tech support, they still might be ironing out some glitches with Vista, we got it right when it came out last April and have had nothing but problems!I always call tech. Until my warranty runs out, they are my saving grace!

there will be an error on the "view details" button that tells you what service or driver failed on startup.

From there I would suggest you either google the problem or post it on here so we can actually help with that exact problem. The last time I encountered this with a vista machine was when someone had installed alcohol120 that put a scsi driver file that was not compatible with vista into the machine and this was blocking startup. The solution was to just delete the file and run the repair again.
