with the lack of details we can only guess
i would download auslogics diskdefrag and try that it will defrag your hard drive better than windoze defrag does and at first use and once a month after i would select the defrag and optimize button ( takes a quite a bit longer but there is a button to shut down your computer after it’s done so you can run it at the end of your day)
if that does not help then it maybe time to reformat your hard drive and start from a fresh install
dell has a recovery partition and if it is intact will only take about 25 to 40 minutes reinstall from that image ( but it will put all the crapware that dell put on the machine originally so run pc decrapifier to get rid of it )
keeping only avg or avira will do rest of the task plus a[”advanced system care”-download.com] delete if any useless emails taking up spaces.Deleting important software tend to crash the sys.using of zip files will help to save more space. use of disk cleanup from c-drive[right click on the c/d/e/f drive will show a icon of disk cleanup for deletion of useless files plus a window appears after few mins top bar written ”more options” helps more options to clean disk, without crashing the sys.
More RAM will always help and is often a good investment.
You may also want to try defragmenting your drive: Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Defragmenter.
You could also try Disk Cleanup in the same folder.
Deleting files will not help with performance. You could defrag the drive, which helps when the computer is fetching files somewhat. RAM will help if you have a lot of programs open at the same time or memory hogging programs. The biggest help though would be a new computer since that computer is probably still running a single core CPU.
Disk clean up is a good start.
Next would be shutting down the PC, disconnecting all the cables and carefully blowing the dust off the internal fans and cooling fins.
If the system isn’t to old, I recommend a Windows registry defragger like Gleary RegistryRepair.
If the system is over 3 yrs old I recommend a totally fresh re-installation of windows, all your drivers and programs and all your data. An extra hard drive makes it a LOT easier to back-up and restore your data.
Note I said "data". You do not want to back-up and restore your whole drive, because then you’ll just be restoring the problems you currently have.
24% is plenty of space on the harddrive.
512Mb is plenty for most users, but you don’t say what programs you run.
