this is what I put on my own plus on my customers:
SIMPLE STEPS TO
DOWNLOADING
VIRUS & SPYWARE PROTECTION
AVG FOR VIRUS PROTECTION
AVG anti FOR SPYWARE, MALWARE, ROOTKITS
BOTH FOUND AT http://www.grifsoft.com or go to yahoo and enter in search box – AVGfree and the first or 1. Item that is listed is the web site for you to go to.
Once there you will see advertisement for both free & paid plus updates, at the left upper side you’ll see download for free basic protection, click the orange download bar and this will get the free program for AVG virus
Under that picture you will see the words AVG anti-spy ware Free edition the writing is in orange, click it for your download of AVG anti spy ware program
If for any reason someone just needs the updates to the current program and cannot download on their machine, a person a look to bottom right corner of page and find them, put on jump drive and just plug in and AVG will find it when you click update on the program. (this is just for the virus program)
Now for your next layer of protection download the following also but remember you can only run one program at a time, but each of these will fine things the other didn’t.
Spybot search & destroy found at http://www.safer-networking.org
Superantispyware found at http://superantispyware.com
And finally go to this web site for this program to clean up your internet history, cookies, browser history, recycle bin, IE Explorer, etc all the boxes can be preset and basically in 4 steps you can clean computer. It does so well that disc clean usually only will find 32-100MB after its done
http://www.snapfiles.com go to the freeware section, look for Internet Cleanup, then look for the software called IE Privacy Keeper
Last but not least do Defrag at least 2 times in a row even if program says not needed, as XP Defrag program isn’t the best and needs to be run more often.
And also go to http://www.glaryulitilies.com for free registry repair programs or to http://www.snapfiles.com and to their freeware section to find them also.
and do recommend ZoneAlarm as its free a little bit of a pain at first but works great, remember only one virus program such as Avg but suggest at least 3 on spyware only run one at a time though, if you need instructions on any of them feel free to e-mail me
1. do not use more than one anti virus program. ( I love avg)
2. spybot search and destroy is a good spyware program and so is avg anti spyware. ( I don’t suggest others because some use pop ups and other things that I do not like)
3. the best Internet browser is firefox ( it can take some getting use to because U customize with add ons) a must have for security.
4. for firewalls I like avg (must purchase) internet security. But if you are strapped for cash and have windows XP make sure it is turned on ( if not sure just google how to turn on firewall on windows XP) and use zone alarm ( free version is a pain but it works). Uninstall old version first.
5. Use opendns as your dns for security and faster web browsing.
6. if you use paypal, ebay, bank online or do other things that you need to make sure never to get into anyone else hands you need a password manager and Web Form Filler all in one.(roboform cost less than $30)
7. avg has a root virus detector also.
These are the things that I suggest ( nothing more and nothing less). I have a web site with all the links to all of these. Since I have had what I have listed I have never had a problem with any virus, spyware, or phishing websites. My web site does have a pop up that tells about an educational game to show you about how to spot phishing sites.
internetsafety.110mb.com
I don’t care for some of the things that you are running, but I won’t go there now; for all intents and purposes they are good enough, they can be run at the same time and won’t conflict with each other.
You said you have Spybot, so I strongly suggest that you uninstall it and reinstall the newest version, v1.5.2. This version is not yet available as part of an update; you must install it separately. The new version fixes the slow start up problem and the incomplete immunization issues that you are having with your current version of Spybot.

You definitely need a firewall. Yes, Win XP does have a built-in firewall, but it is only a one-directional firewall, and firewalls need to be bi-directional to be effective.
Zone Alarm’s free firewall isn’t as good as some, but it’s certainly better than the built-in XP firewall. I think you should try to uninstall your Zone Alarm and then reinstall it.
And finally Superantispyware. It’s (IMO) the *best* free on-demand antispyware available. Their motto says that they get rid of all the spyware, not just the easy ones, and it’s true. Super finds and removes malware that some of the paid programs don’t.

yes
Hi. So many questions and so little time 🙂
Your use of avg free also ad aware 2007, spybot search and destroy, spywareblaster will give you pretty good basic protection. That combination should not cause a conflict or Clash (great band).
But the kind of protection that you need really depends on your internet activities.
If you are into illegally stealing lots of music, software, games and movies, using Limewire or torrents or some other P2P program…well then you need a fortress of protection around your computer! Those downloads can be infested with crap!
If you are just doing web-surfing and e-mail and some YouTube/MySpace….then your current protections are fairly good.
But ….you absolutely do need a firewall, your Windows XP does have a very basic firewall that is built-in…just make sure that it is turned "ON".
SAS (the free version ) is simply an on-demand scanner…it just sits there doing nothing until you tell use it to remove some tough malware…its a keeper. It is not a reg cleaner, so don’t worry about that.
Registry cleaning is best left to experts (your #1 son is correct). A wrong move and you can bork your whole computer. The "registry" function of your CCleaner is a pretty safe way on tidying up your reg. But be sure and back it up when CCleaner prompts you…just in case.
Just remember….To always keep your Windows 100% updated and patched with all critical and security updates from Windows Updates. THIS IS A MUST! In Internet Explorer just click Tools then Windows Updates.
Hope I helped you but there is no need to award me ten points ( I got plenty already) for a best answer,,,, instead donate a dollar to you favorite charity instead.
Enjoy!
