The most common cause of computer freezes is a corrupt registry.
Corruption within your registry keys, registry classes, and registry settings are the most common causes of Windows error messages.
The Computer registry is a database that stores all of your computer
settings. The computer registry becomes more complex as you use your computer. The more programs you use the greater the chance your
computer registry will develop errors and become bloated over time. Without cleaning the registry on a regular basis it is very likely that your PC will freeze.
Cleaning the Windows registry improves the performance of your computer and will reduce the number of PC freezes. The Registry cleaner cleans the registry and frees up Windows registry space.
Completely clean your windows registry with a few clicks of the mouse

The most likely cause is a bloated registry which has become the home for all kinds of useless bits and pieces of data. Whenever any change is made to the system settings or a program is installed or uninstalled, a new entry is generated in the registry. The operating system while running your computer has to pick its way through all this excess material. There is a multitude of useless bits and pieces to be removed.Parts of uninstalled programs,parts of incompletely installed programs,dead drivers and many other things. clean your registry and remove all the useless data fragments and no longer needed information to fix the freeze error! I should like to commend Registry Easy http://cleanup-comuter-run-perfectly.com to you ! You can try ! Good luck!
Can only guess..
XP is slow compared to Vista..
My XP-Professional PC uses 400-MHz RAM..and a Pentium 4(3.0GHz)..it runs smoothly(slow)..
===
Freezing..is a matter of hardware..
When re-installing your OS..pull your PCI-expansion cards..and extra RAM..use a single RAM Module..empty PCI-slots..pull all the USB-cables..
I also let my XP PC operate for a whole day..in that configuration..
..and your CHIPSET Driver must be intalled first–before any other drivers..
===
Today’s PC’s need to have dual core and high speed RAM..
..I think the internet is also adding issues to computers..(that cause failures)..
There seems to be a small war going on…concerning Security Software–I use McAFEE(its been very good)..
===
Dual Core..800-MHz RAM..seems to really say alot.
Check the event viewer to see if there is anything there.
Go to START > RUN > then type
eventvwr.msc
then click ok.
Check if there are any events listed at the times that it has frozen.
This seems to be a hardware problem. Check your PSU (Power supply) and memory RAM.
Could be a hardware issue rather than software if you did a format and reinstall of windows. Try putting in an old graphics card and see if it still freezes then move on to other devices like sound card take it out. Unplug your network card if you have it and do a process of elimination and put in minimal RAM and do a whole checklist.
Check that there are no conflicts in Device Manager.
If the CPU fan is not running at a high gallop then it is not overheating. When the CPU overheats the fan is ordered to work harder and you will hear a very significant whooooosh sound that is much louder than it’s normal whir.
Don’t worry about overclocking. I assume you used to have no problems before until recently so the chances are that some hardware is causing the problem – you just got to find it. Refer to my above advice.
You most likely have a heating issue. Are you overclocking the processor – or has someone sold you a computer that has an overclocked processor? If so, set the MB to the correct speed.
