Hi
Many people with new computers forget to do windows updates these should be done regular update help protect and speed up your computer.
Have you tried the recovery disk you got with the computer this will have a repair option on it so you will not lose any data.
Disk cleanup/defragment.
You also say you deleted McAfee Norton and downloaded a new anti virus software Did you delete Norton before loading new software. because I have found that if you do Norton seem to leave viruses that are a problem to remove.
I use AVG Free copy to disk or some other storage device and load it while off the Internet Once installed turn Internet back on and do the update. I use this with a malware and spyware program Ad-Aware 2007 both can be downloaded from http://www.downloads.com. McAfee Norton gets all over your computer so delete everything to do with it in add and remove programs and from c drive, programs, McAfee
Anyway try updates first Then recovery disk if you cannot find the repair option use the windows vista installation disk this has a repair option follow instructions from this site.

Good luck
If you download this program as suggested http://www.pcaholic.com you will find you have to pay for the software You will only get a scan free and possible spyware
Take Care
pitstop.com and its free!
Seems you did all the right things, but I think the hard disk is defective.
Bring it back to the store and get a replacement laptop or have them replace the hard drive.
