Well you’re going to get two answers here.
Most people will tell you to use the free cleaner "CCleaner" which u can get from http://www.ccleaner.com – but this is BAD because it just tries to find as many problems as possible to make itself look good (why else would it be free)?
You need to be careful with the regsitry because it’s a crucial part of your system. If you screw up one of the important files inside it, you’re going to have BIG problems down the line… so you need to be sure the registry cleaner you use will be as "delicate" as possible with your PC.
The best regsitry cleaner I’ve used is one called "RegCure". It’s very fast at scanning and it speeds up your computer a lot. You can see exactly what it does here: http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/regcure_review.html
Start the task manager by pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL
and go to processes tab and see which process taking more cpu usage excluding system Idle Processes.
most of the time a process svchost.exe takes more than 90%,
if then kill it by right click on its entry and click on end process button.
For svchost.exe fix see this link:
http://www.technibble.com/how-to-fix-svchost-using-100-cpu-memory-leak/
DO the same for the cpu power hungry processes. Then see the speed.
If it is slow again then use a free program CCleaner :

That is basically a repackaged eMachines T6412, since Gateway bought eMachines. If you have not upgraded it at all, your processor is only 2.2 GHz, you only have 512MB of RAM and you have an onboard (integrated) graphics adapter.
Best and most inexpensive thing to do is add another 512MB of RAM to it. See the "source" link below for some info on your machine.
If you have a lot of programs loading when you start your computer that will make it slow down a lot. Make sure you don’t have programs like chat programs or real player and other programs that are not needed to be loaded at startup. Also if you have any Kodak software on your computer it will really slow down your computer at startup.
how much ram does it have. and when you boot it up how much ram is being used.. sounds like you have alot of startup programs running in the background of the pc causing it to run slow. also avg has this thing about running scans i the Background alot..that will slow it down big time. try doing a msconfig…start – run- "msconfig ‘press OK click startup tab..and all the items with checks are running everytime you boot up. uncheck the ones not needed and reboot pc and see the difference
You can use a registry cleaner to clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.
