I have a Gateway laptop with Vista OS. How do I reformat it and are there any free defrag & registry cleaners?

If you mean reformat it and put a different operating system, or the same one on, then insert your operating system CD (vista, xp etc.) into your drive and restart the computer. When the Gateway logo, or whichever logo appears at the beginning of your computer starting up, it should say something like press f12 or one time boot. Press what it says. Then when the next menu shows up, use your arrow keys to move up and down and hit enter on the CD/DVD drive. This should then bring up a new page saying press any key to boot from CD. At this point, press any key on your keyboard. This will bring up the install process for the operating system. Follow the instructions given in the setup.
there is a good free defrag software on your computer. Click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, disk defrag. I have had no need for a different disk defrag on my computer.
When you click start, you should just be able to start typing your search query and hit enter. At the very bottom of the start menu there is a text box that says search program files.
Any questions on what i said, just add additional details.
go to start menu and type in the search box recovery, open recovery manager. a wizard will pop up with various options to re-install the o/s or programs. you can use Ccleaner, it has a registry cleaner built in, as far as defrag, deflaggler is ok, your internal search is in the start menu, open start and type in your info where it says start search.
Windows comes with a reformating program already installed. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > There ya go.
