Hi Zowjac
I think the best thing to do is look at some reviews of registry cleaners for yourself.
Most of them have free registry scans that will allow you to see which one you like best and you can also ensure it matches your operating system.
The source provided below is a great place to look at reviews of the best registry cleaners found online today.
I hope this helps you on your journey

I used to use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) which is free.
However, it doesn’t have any sort of backup facility which meant that one day, it deleted the wrong registry file and made my computer unable to boot up. I took it to the computer repair store and they wanted $150 to fix it!!!
I now use a cleaner called "RegAce" because it’s easy to use and has a complete backup system which even makes a restore point on your computer. You can read about it here: http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/regace_review.html
ccleaner disk cleaner /registery error cleaner http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
also use auslogic disk defrag http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download
there is also a all in one called advanced system care http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html
also there is away to turn unwanted programs off on start up which will lower ya process and ya start up speed,
on windows xp type msconig in to the run box click run and go to the start up tab and turn the unwanted / needed things off to do the same but on vista type system config in ya start menu press enter then go to the start up tab and do the above
and before all this uninstall any unwanted items/programs
There are many tools and many symtoms… the registry is just one…
1. uninstall old programs that you’re not using. everything your PC has to keep track of degrades performance.
2. clean all the junk from your PC…. ccleaner is a free download that does a great job of that
3. run a scandisk on computer to find/fix any sector problems… this is a standard windows tool. only runs at boot time, but you can schedule it from windows.
4. run a disc defrag to clean up the access speed
5. check your startup programs… if you have windows defender installed, then open control panel and select software explorers… every program that starts at boot time eats up cpu and memory resources. if in doubt, just DISABLE, not delete.
6. If you do decide to run a registry cleaner, do all of the above first to remove the need for registry entries for all of the junk. AND… be sure to backup the registry – there are freeware programs to assist.. e.g., ERUNT is a good one… Then and only then run the registry cleaner.
Ccleaner is used most widely I think. It will back up your registry before cleaning just in case but I’ve never had a problem.
You should also defrag at least once a month.
Delete your browsing history and cookies periodically if browser is slow.
