In order to speed up your machine, you will need to first understand what slows down a computer. The first area to look at in what slows down a computer is the items that are starting up and the services set to start automatically. If you do not need the software right away but it still starts up automatically, go ahead and remove it from start-up.
The next area to research is possible infections and corruption in the Operating System. Infinite loops can be created when software or drivers become corrupted.
Last, you should examine how much RAM you have installed on your computer. A Windows XP computer should have atleast 512MB as it takes 256MB just to load up the Operating System.

Tools you can use to optimize your machine are Crap Cleaner (CCleaner – http://www.ccleaner.com/download/ ). You should remove possible temp files and go to the Start Up section of the program. From here you can delete/disable items that are starting up. If you do not know what an item is you can use Google to learn about the item.
The next step would be to use Hijackthis (http://www.tomcoyote.org/hijackthis ) to find infections from Spyware that would bog down your IE session as well as your Network settings. Please use this website (http://www.hijackthis.de/ ) to review the log file created by Hijackthis; the website will identify possible items to "fix."
The last recommended step would be to run a few scans with Spybot and remove any necessary Services under the Advanced mode. (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html )
Good luck.
Use System Machenic to boost your comp.
under run type msconfig. select boot. choose what u dont need on start up. this will increase speed when turned on. Add/remove programs. delete old pics and vids. empty recycle bin. Do a disk Clean-up. If you leave your computer on all the time then you dont need a defragment. If not then Defrag your Hard Drive.
p.s. put your songs on a removable disk.
PC Restore everything. Then put disk back in and bring back songs
Spybot Search and Destroy
Lava soft Adaware
Crap Cleaner, Ewido, or AVG antispyware
get lavasofts adaware, run hometrends anti-virus or download a free one…
Just look on google for anti-spyware, malware…etc and you can solve most of your problems without a wipe.
if you have your starter discs, back up your system on an external HD, wipe everything clean, then reinstall your system and whatever programs you need
