I downloaded an XP registry cleaner… in a series of tasks designed to improve my computers operation speed and power. But when I completed the registry cleaner program, my windows popup no longer functioned correctly. I included a link to a photobucket image of a screen shot… to show you what my computer is doing now.

It used to have a dark region on the top left-half of the menu, where other operations used to be. The bottom left-half was devoted to recently ran programs. But now the entire left half is recently ran programs.
deedles… system recovery isnt the solution to every problem. Id rather not have to restore years of work and software installations just to recover from a minor tweak. If it got this way simply, it can be fixed simply… and some geek has got to know how.

I think what you should do now is to uninstall windows XP registry. I don’t know whether it is a matter of windows XP. However, i think you only can do so. Then you can try other kind of software which can backup your files and can repair your registry. I don’t know much about this kind of softwares. My friend has used one before. You can have a look and see whether it can resolve your problem. http://www.1Click-Optimize-Pc.com

There is no cause for worry. Nothing has gone wrong.
Right click on start, click properties and select classic option.
In short, all control of how it pops up are in start properties. You have to try out various options there.
System restore does not undue years of hard work. When you install a new program Windows will create a restore point just prior to the install of the program. Choose the restore point and it will undue the changes made in program files as well as the registry to what it was before the install of that program. System Restore itself is limited to whatever Mb/Gb storage you have defined.
When you cleaned the registry did you accept the choice to create a backup? And have you tried restoring that backup?
did this registry cleaner you used make a backup, if so, then restore the backup.
What I would is do a system recovery to a date that your PC worked well. Then go to CNET.com and try a different registry cleaner. They have lots of free downloads.
