Yeah, this is one of the side effects of that c****y malware package.
Reboot your computer. While it’s booting, hit F5 to bring up the boot menu. Select Safe Mode With Networking.
If it gives you a choice, log in as administrator.
Now run Malware Bytes. Be sure it’s running the latest version and the latest version of definitions. Do a full scan on your C:\ drive.
This should detect a bunch of junk. Of primary interest is a registry key called "BAD OPEN". This key is what’s causing the problem with your applications.
Reboot, and let it boot normally.
If it STILL happens, run Malware Bytes. When it asks you what application to use, click the Browse button and manually navigate into the Programs folder, and into the folder where Malware Bytes is installed and choose MBAM.EXE (this is the main Malware Bytes executable.) (Note: you can use this same method to manually run other applications on your computer – but you will probably still have problems since things like Java, Flash, etc. are also programs that have had their links broken due to that bad registry key.)
Run another full scan. Hopefully it’ll fix the problem and when you reboot everything should be back to normal.
The question is how did you get rid of the virus – sounds like you got rid of more than you should have. Start by reloading XP right over your present install – that will preserve the data. Go to the manufacturers web site and download the drivers. Now you can download other stuff like firefox.
Scroll down to exe fix at this site. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Download the .zip file and unzip it.
Then right-click on the exefix.reg file you just got and select Merge. Say OK to the warning. Your programs should now work.

If you don’t have a program to unzip files then you may want to right-clik this link http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/xp_exe_fix.reg and select Save as and let your browser save it as xp_exe_fix.reg then you can right click the file and Merge with the registry without having to unzip.
