Though you hear about it all the time, you actually don’t need to clean the registry. That’s not to say it doesn’t break but you would know if it were broken.
You have two options for cleaning up your PC. The first is just plain starting over by doing a factory restore. Most PCs come with either a restore disk or a restore partition on the hard drive. One you invoke the restore, it will reset the PC to like when it was first new. That means any program you’ve installed since and any files you’ve download will be completely wiped out. If you chose to go that route then make sure you backup everything you want to save.
The instructions for doing a restore can be found in the user’s manual. If you don’t have a copy, you can download. Visit the PC manufacturer’s website and search their support section for your model number.
That’s kind of an extreme step though.
To clean up a PC first reboot. Start hitting the F8 key until you see a menu. Select safe mode with networking. A clean version of Windows will start. This will take a few minutes and look different that normal but it’s OK.
Update your virus scanner then do a full scan. If you don’t have an antivirus program, download Microsoft Security Essentials. Make it delete everything that it finds.
Next, download Malwarebyte’s Antimalware, update it, and run a full scan with that. Make it delete everything that it finds.
Restart your PC and let it boot up normally.
Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all the game and programs you don’t need or don’t use.
Delete or back up all the videos, music, and document files you no longer use.
Removing old programs and large files will free up hard drive space which can improve the performance of your computer if the hard drive is full. Windows needs a good chunk of hard drive space to run properly. When the free space on the hard drive gets too small, Windows will let you know.
Once that’s done you should run Disk Cleanup. Have it delete all those old temp files.
Run Windows Update to download all the latest service pack, security updates, critical updates, and drivers. Video drivers can improve your performance in video games.
Analyze your hard drive(s) with Disk Defragmenter. If it says to, defragment your hard drives(s).
Following those steps should improve the performance of your PC if you haven’t done any of them in a while.
