   best to upgrade processor, add ram and upgrade video card.

   second best: (not free, so such thing as free and best at the same time)
   – transfer all media files to external harddrives.
   – update antivirus and all antispywares, run scans to clean pc. malwres can slow down your pc to a freeze.
   – add fast usb high capacity usb sticks and use them with eboostr (eboostr.com for details)
   – clean using ashampoo’s winoptimizer, and defrag using diskeeper

   They work great!

   Now it’s $69.94 to purchase it.

   Instead though, just torrent it from isohunt.com.

   It takes forever to load because of all the installed software trying to start up at once.

   Downloading something to make it faster is counter-productive; it will make your computer slower.

   Do the opposite. Get rid of programs. Uninstall programs you never use to help increase your computer’s responsiveness. Don’t install garbage/useless programs unless you absolutely have to. The less you have installed on your machine, the snappier it will run.

   Dormant software (or any data for that matter; ie. music) will not slow down your computer, but running software will. Make sure you’re not allowing a billion programs to start at boot. If you have a billion icons in your systray after boot, this is what’s happening.

   Also, anti-virus programs KILL your performance. That’s the trade-off. It’s possible to remain "safe" and secure without having realtime anti-malware installed and running, but that’s another topic altogether.

   You won’t have "too much used memory" if most of it is being swapped to the hard disk. Swapping (a byproduct of virtual memory) makes your computer slower by a few orders of magnitude. If your hard drive is continuously crunching while it’s "working", you are swapping too much, which means your system is starved of memory. Buy more memory, lots more.
