The only time that a computer would be too broken to be fixed is if a part started making noise and exploded the entire case. If it’s running slow ,just start over. When starting up, hold down DEL and you will go into the BIOS. There you can wipe the hard drive. Just stick in the windows CD and start it up. You will lose all data, but your computer will go much faster.
Sounds like a failing HDD,,could be registry mess, virus junk. First clean it up…use some heavy duty AV …FSF have some that work inside the win kernel.
Scan it, reboot, rescan, reboot, get it clean as you can then back up any data files that you want to keep.
Reformat, Reinstall,,BUT do a clean install, not a silly repair.
Keep it offline until you are certain it is clean.
Defrag
Run some of fred langas batch files on it. careful,,that is what backups are for.
Now Scan the files on the backup CD/DvD or whatever for viri before placing them back in /dir.
If it is still sluggish, might wanna check the HDD out.
New one costs about $50.
Add another 256 or 512 RAM if it supports it, and use that box as the reserve and backup for the Vista box.
Keep that one offline as much as possible, yes get the critical updates and junk, but then just use it to store the Physical Backups from the Vista box.
Peekay is correct…. however… if you are not qualified to do all the "fix’n" yourself… check out the charges of different computer services before commiting to letting them do it… some charge WAY too much… you can get a good computer, better than what you have in the XP one, for under $500… some services charge over $100 an hour to "fix" such problems… Good Luck.
You didn’t really give any spec’s on the XP computer. The XP machine prolly needs a reload, bumped up to 1 GB of RAM and setting the virtual memory to 1536 min, 3000 max.
Fix it if it’s at least a Pentium 4 or an AMD equivalent of a P4.
If the hardware itself works. i.e. It boots up & does what it’s supposed to (kind of), then the rest of the problems are just software related & those can be solved easily!
With a bit of TLC, a good checkup & cleanup of the machine might be sufficient, failing that, a reinstall of Windows itself will revert it back to ‘new’ & thus all the problems will vanish!
If you fancy throwing money at it, you might want to put some more RAM in it to improve overall performance. But, what you’ve described is a software problem & that can be fixed!
You know the drill…reformat and reinstall
only failed hardware would make a pc ‘too messed up to be fixed’ – though the failed hardware can be replaced easily.
all software problems can be repaired, even if in a worst case scenario the hard drive needs to be wiped and windows reinstalled.
With that slow of a computer I would personally scrap it. If you are wanted to fix it probably the best way would be to use your XP disk and format the hard drive and resinstall your operating system. This should fix the errors provided they aren’t a hardware problem.
