I have windows xp professional service pack 2 and I want to know If I can do a clean install of the os with out having to format my hard drive?
yes but if I install the new os without uninstalling the otherr one I willhave 2 partitions which I dont want.

Yes. Just pop in the install cd, when it ask about formatting, say no, then just install over the old version. All your files will still be there.
Just go to "Start" then "Programs" Then "Accessories" then "System Tools" then to "System Restore" If you did a restore the last time you installed your OS then you could just revert back to that, just pick the earliest date.
No. If you wish to do a clean install and save needed data, then copy the data to something else like another computer in your network, some cd/dvds, an external hard drive etc. then do the xp installation.
Thats like saying, can I clean my desk by not taking anything off of it.
A "clean" install implies that nothing else is there when it is installed.
You can do a "repair." That replaces the OS but leaves your other files in place. You will need to boot from the XP CD. It will install XP w SV Pack 1. You will have to download SP2.
