The Windows Registry is a wholesale dumping ground for any application that wants to write to it. After long periods of usage it will bog you down as the registry tree grows more complex. You can verify this behavior by reinstalling the OS and noting how nice and speedy everything is. For a while.
Registry cleaners attempt to rectify an unwieldy registry by nuking any keys that are verifiably useless. There are many more keys that these cleaners can’t take the chance of killing because they may be still relevant. Registry cleaners provide a small measure of optimization, but nothing to waste your time with. I consider them as effective as disk defragmentation – the results are dubious, the time to take doing it is lengthy.
In both cases nothing beats a quick reformat of the drive and an OS reinstall. I do that about every 6 months out of general principle.
