sucking at math really doesn’t help you getting into computers. I mean you can do the basics like what you described, being in charge of a small network, and doing basic software and hardware fixes, but thats nothing. The pay is generally pretty low compared to rest of the industry… and you are looked down upon by real computer people, and people that dont know about computers… so I wouldn’t recommend this path unless you plan on improving your math.
Unfortunately, if you think about it, a computer is just a device that does mathematical calculations… so… how do you get good at computers if you don’t understand the math that it is doing…
but to answer your question, here are some sad jobs that no one wants except for losers:
generally competition in these jobs are extremely fierce due to many people just not knowing math… and the lack of any real knowledge in math needed for these jobs.
Junior network admin – pay very low
Computer network technician – pay is better but still really low compared to a computer engineer
Computer Technician Hardware – pay is essentially non existent…
Computer Technician Software – pay is there but, got a boat load of competition plying for the same job.
My recommendation for you. get good at math, and get a computer engineering or computer science degree. if you can’t do it… maybe the computer field isn’t for you. I mean I wanted to be a doctor, but I guess I just couldn’t see the sight of blood. guess it won’t work, same thing in your case maybe math is just not your thing…
Lastly, to end this matter more upbeat. You could always go management with computer emphasis… that way you can still enter the computer industry. but you’ll end up managing the people that are doing the actual real programming and network engineering… the pay is much better than the previously described jobs. The only problem, is again, because the pay is pretty much insane, the competition here will be extremely fierce… and also the math requirement will be really low, which means tons of people will be trying to kill for a job… cause, most people suck at math…
Honestly, I hope I convinced you.. in order to stand out and get a good high paying tech job, you gotta get good at math, and overcome your fears. There is no such thing as suck at math. It’s what you told yourself. And you probably didn’t do that many problems. You probably did like a couple of problems here and there and got discouraged when you get the answers wrong. You need to do like tons and tons like 500 problems a day to get good. You’re only 18, you still got time to learn this stuff. Luckily, community colleges usually make up for lack of any education that was taught in High school. Learn your math now… go to those free tutoring sessions get up to the calculus level. take real computer networking or computer science classes. And if you’re really up for the challenge go computer engineering. Thats where the mulah is at… on average a computer engineering degree with emphasis in network security the pay is 85k -120k depending on how much experience you have. But to get there, you will need to take tons of math classes…. so.. yeah, math makes you money… no math.. no money… wish they told you that in high school eh?
