i want to free up some disk space on my windows 2000 xp system
first i go to start, then to programs,
then to accessories, then to system tools,
then i go to clean disk, once i get there and click it gives me several blocks to check in green or un check i usually check all of them.
it removes all of them but is not removing the stuff contained in the "compress old files" block. what’s wrong? how can i get this to work?

try ‘tuneup,cccleaner’
otherwise go to run(winkey+r),type %temp% and click ok.
select all file(ctrl+a)and delete all for free some disk space
You probably don’t want to compress files. It will slow down your computer quite a bit. Disk Cleanup is showing you how much disk space it estimates would be freed if most files were compressed. But disk drives are so cheap it makes much more sense to get a new one than to slow your computer down.
It’s not hard to get a new drive and transfer everything to it. Most drives include the required software and detailed instructions. Then you can stop having to free up disk space.
You’re "compressing old files", not deleting them. You see, when you have unnecessary files your HDD does not delete them, merely overwrites them, some files can not be overwritten, and therefore are compressed to conserve HDD space. When these files are accessed they are uncompressed as needed.
Hi, this is because the "compress old files" option does just that, it compresses, i.e. makes smaller, files that Windows deems to be old, so that they take up less space. It does not delete the files, it is only designed to make them smaller.
Hope that helps.
Windows 2000 or Windows XP? Those are two different operating systems, unless you are dual booting.
Not sure, but try defragmenting your disk. Search defrag.
