First I would check all folders with unecessary files – for example: Internet Temp Files, Cookies, Trash. Then I would check for programs that you have on your computer. I know you’ll hate this, but this includes games or music that you downloaded from the Internet. Chances are they take up a lot of the memory on your computer. You may have to save them on a disk, or trash them to the recycle bin altogether. Either way, you must take them off. Using up a lot of your computer’s memory is more likely the main reason computers are slow. That’s why when you save stuff on your computer, you must do it very sporadically or not at all.
Do you work in an office where perhaps you have some experienced IT people who could give you some tips. Or perhaps you could bring the harddrive in to let them have a look and show you what you need to do for the next time. It’s worth asking. If you don’t then try doing a system cleanup by going to your control panel and click on performance and maintenance and then click on rearrange items on your hard drive and you can also clck on free up hard disk space.
Hope this helps you.
I’m not down with giving money to do simple things I can do either.
Check out this excellent solution to cleaning out unnecessary files and registry leftovers.
Its free and relatively safe by comparison to other solutions.

Also, you should run anti spyware stuff to keep your computer free of malware. These are also free and good.

run scandisk error checker
analize with defragmenter…, but before defragmenting, clean out old files like , internet files folder, temp folder, and trash,
things to determine whats causing it to run slow,
check free space , 300+,
check swapfile size,
check amount of ram being used,
if several programs are running in background, may be wise to disable unnecessary , depend on amount of ram for system,
256,516mb, 1gb+, try to leave some free for programs, being used daily, aside from firewalls, and virus scanners,
check system properties / advanced/ performance/virtual memory, settings adjust to your requirements,
update any needed files, virus defs, drivers, flash/shockwave, java,…
check hardware anyways , ram seating, fans, cables and wires,
