go to task manager select processes tab and see what program has the higher CPU usage.
uninstall that program or terminate that process. i had a similar problem with zone alarm antivirus…
Type msconfig into the run box, go to start up and disable everything, reboot… If it doesn’t happen repeat and enable one item at a time…
I do not see the problem with letting the computer run at high usage. It only means the computer is running at the speed intended, or you have alot of background programs or processes that may slow the computer down.
Disabling background processes either using taskmanager or enterring msconfig will both work to solve the problem but it may not be the solution that will work properly. What you need is a program that scans your computer and tells you what you can and can not un-install or disable from loading or running in the background.
The one program I use on my 2nd computer which is only a 1G machine with shared 256M video… so yeah my 2nd machine is even crappier than yours lol… I run Tuneup Utilities 2009 (2010 is out already). It has tools that scan your entire system to help determine what program is useless, rarely used, or never used, and gives you options to un-install them, unload them from memory temporary or permanently. It also has a neat auto module that loads or can load into memory to auto weekly clean your junk files as well as do a mini defrag weekly to help keep your machine running smooth.
Its a purchase to use type program with a 30 day unlimited (no program restrictions) use trial period, but if you know where to look, you can get it for free. It will not undo any of its clean-up when the 30 day trial period expires, but it has an undo feature if you so choose to undo the fix-ups it has done.
It can also be used to customize the look and feel of the computer, but any custom themes, icons, and cursors may slow down the machine. My 1G machine is a dual core, and I gave it custom icons and all the bells and whistles with Tuneup Utilities with no noticable slow down.
Some people frown on trying Tuneup Utilities and may even give me a thumbs down rating for suggesting it, because they do not understand the program and how it can undo what it has done. The few reviews I’ve read about it were from people who did not know it can undo any changes it has done, but I suggest it because I’ve been using them since 2007 and it has kept my 1G machine running as fast as my 4G machine.
