You can download and scan your computer for free.
Youre best bet is to research the available products out there. Check to see what features the products have, their effectiveness and ease of use for beginners. The Windows registry is definately not something you want to toy around with on your own. A simple mistake in RegEdit can cause problems far worse than before you were on the look out for a registry cleaner.

CCleaner is good, but only removes crap, it doesn’t have registry defrag, etc. Recently read this article about free registry cleaners:

ccleaner will do the job, If its really running slow you may need to do more house keeping, like delete browsing history, delete spyware,run a virus scan, defrag your hard drive, reduce the amount of start up programs, may be more ram is required?, your only looking at one fifth of the problem.
