The built-in defragmenter is not good. Try a third party defrag tool like diskeeper.
For some immediate ‘c’ disk space gain, delete all but the most recent Java version & update from ‘Add or Remove Programs’ (see ‘Control Panel’> Add or Remove…)
One disk performance item is to ‘compress contents’ and ‘allow index service’. These help optimize file recovery speed & save disk space.
Start> my computer> right click ‘c’ drive> properties> general tab: here check both boxes & ‘OK’.
Don’t freak out: it may say days or more to run, but this time drops dramatically as the process advances. Just walk away and let ‘er run for the duration: it will self close when done.
Depending on the files & sizes, it may take several hours to do (maybe do it at night before bed?).
When done, run ‘CCleaner’ (http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/)
& defrag the drive.
A couple other things you can do are
Go to your internet explorer and delete temporary files
Go to your hard drive in explorer and type on the address bar %temp% and it will take you to the temp directory and you can delete all those files in the temp directory.
Go to your email program if it is on your hard drive, like Outlook or outlook express and empty out your trash and also remove larger emails with attachments and then empty your trash again, because they can take up lots of space.
Also you can go to the Temp directory under Windows directory and find more files to delete.
Another thing you can do is go out and download Irfanview photo program for free and use it to view larger photos and then save them into JPG’s to save file space for each picture.
Another thing you can do is change the size of the virtual memory swap file to a smaller size or a set size, so it does not keep varying in size.
I hope this all is helpful to you?
Volume size = 7.96 GB
even with windoz 98 thats tight. i would get at least a 40/80/100Gb drive, ill even send you one for free if you like.
You need to be careful when deleting files on a computer…especially is you don’t know too much about computers (I’m not being a b*tch when i say that, I’m being honest cuase I have a family member who thinks they know about computers, then mess it up and call me to fix it). Anyway, you have to be sure you aren’t deleting files that your software needs to run. If you start deleting random stuff that you think isnt important, you may start to find out that your programs aren’t running right, your software is messed up, etc. and could even make your computer run slower.
Its very difficult for anyone to tell you exactly which files to delete to make more room on your hard drive, because we would need to know everything about your computer and everything you have on it. My advice, is have someone with computer knowledge have a take a look at your computer to clean it up for you.
If you insist on cleaning things up, you can at least go to My Computer, right-click on your C drive and click on "disk cleanup", it will clean up what isn’t important.
