You need to uninstall McAfee before you can install another AV program. Here’s the removal tool:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe
Want a free and effective antivirus protection that works realtime? Get Microsoft Security Essentials:
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
It’s what I use on my netbook and it isn’t a resource hog. That’s one of my criterias as the netbook is a slow computer to begin with.
Edit: I connected my netbook to a friend’s private network with file sharing enabled. I just opened a shared folder with some files on a likewise connected computer. I didn’t instruct MSE to scan the network drive. It did on its own and spotted a trojan and a worm and requested permission to disinfect. That’s why I was amazed with MSE. That’s what I call realtime protection.
It’s a nice feeling when you know your AV solution is at work.
Using two antiviruses at same it is not advisable because they may treat each other as potential threats. Using one antivirus at a time is good and effective but we should continuously upgrade it and it should be latest version.
You can download first, but remove your anti-virus before installing another.
I highly recommend ESET Smart Security. It’s a very good piece of software and very rarely misses a virus (has won numerous awards for not missing viruses.
If you want free though Avast is also good.
Stay away from AVG though, just look at the tests here against different anti-viruses
http://www.eset.com/home/compare-eset-to-competition
You will see that AVG managed to let in a whopping 745 viruses.
ESET can be downloaded from
http://www.eset.com
Highly recommend the smart security package though rather than the NOD32 as this gives you full Anti-virus and firewall as well.
Avast can be downloaded from
http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
YES, it is necessary to uninstall the old one before installing a new one.
Otherwise, your computer will be even slower and it will also become unstable.
yeah you will have to unistall the old virus protection first, unless you want it just taking up space up on your harddrive,
Yes. Multiple anti-virus software may clash each other & create problems. It is best to have just one security software installed. AVG is the best free anti-virus software available. You can get AVG at http://free.avg.com/in-en/homepage .
No…You have to download first…You only have to uninstall the previous anti-virus if you’re gonna start installing the new antivirus…You can download AVG (free version) from cnet.com
Hello,
The others were not totally correct, although they had good intentions.
It’s true that it is not advisable to run multiple anti-virus programs simultaneously as this can cause performance issues and possibly system conflicts.
However, it is PERFECTLY fine to install multiple anti-virus programs on one computer, if you do not run them together. Some people do in fact do this, so that they can have on-demand scanners available.
When they want a second opinion, they turn off their resident anti-virus program and run scans with other installed anti-virus software on their PC.
These are the most recommended free anti-virus software out there:
AVG: http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage
Avast: http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-down…
Avira Anti-Vir: http://www.free-av.com/
After installing either of the anti-virus programs above, you should not use McAfee as your resident protection program because it is expired and would not be entitled to any software upgrades or database definition updates. This would leave your PC in danger zone.
I hope I was of help!
