You don’t have to remove all virii BEFORE you install antivirus software. If you’re concerned, install the new package on a thumb drive, scan the thumb drive for infections on a different / clean PC, then use it to scan the first PC.
You might like Spybot Search and Destroy. Also, you can do an online scan with Housecall.
I’m running a 30day Kaspersky trial package. Seems to work.
Depend on what antivirus program u ar going to use, Norton and Mcafee is known for viruses, so most viruses or trojans is designed to stop them from working…get something new…use F-secure or NOD32.
Happy new yr.
Which "antivirus 2008" did you buy? Several major antivirus programs have that as part of their name. There is also a dangerous rogue program with that name.
Anyway, For best performance and to avoid serious problems ONLY have one antivirus program installed on your computer.
If you have a problem with uninstalling Norton, use their removal tool. Here is a link to their removal tool.

Two of the best free programs for home users to find and remove malware are in the links below.
Download and Install Super Antispyware free. Reboot into Safe mode and Run SAS. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds.

Run the online scan for Bit Defender in normal mode. Allow it to quarantine whatever it finds.

How to Start Windows in Safe Mode:

When you install the new version, and do a scan, it should get rid of it.
This comprehensive system scan from Microsoft will check for viruses, spyware, and it will improve system performance. This is free if you have a windows based computer. This scan will take some time to complete.

Of course, you should clean your computer before installing a new antivirus program. Most antivirus program allow you to run the program off the CD before installation in order to clean the computer. You can do this by putting the disk in your computer and then reboot it. If you do not clean your computer then some viruses could be recognized by the virus program as part of the system.
It’s sure best to. Go to http://www.ewido.com and run their online scan. Then go to TrendMicro and run THEIR online scan. Between the two, you should catch and clean everything.
Good luck!

It is better to clean it
run this free virus scan first. http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ it is best to start with a clean pc.good luck.
