System Restore , Restores settings not files (maybe not al lfiles but settings are 100%) so you are basically right.

Yes, that is one of the main ways the computer restores itself. Sometimes it will fix the virus problem , but most times no. If you have a problem like that take to someone who knows how to fix it.
Registry changes do switch bacj but many viruses change the system restore registries as well.

That’s essentially what a system restore is. It restores the settings of your user account back to an earlier date. All the info and settings are stored in the registry. It could remove viruses/malware, however they are becoming more difficult to remove. There are a few viruses out there that will infect the system restore information and so basically when you do a system restore it either doesn’t successfully restore or the virus is restored with your settings from the restore point you have chosen to restore with.
Not always. but it does most of the time. Do the system restore in safe mode, and go back as far as you can unless you know how long the virus has been dormant.
WARNING. Your System Restore will also need to be switched off, computer rebooted, and System Restore switched back on again once you are sure you have squashed the thing to complete the virus removal.
