   Some "registry cleaners" work VERY well. They will teach you the painful lesson of reinstalling all your software after you have to reprogram your box because the "cleaner" took out the wrong files. Use them at your own risk.

   I find ccleaner.exe is the most consistent. It allows backup before repairing, and does not sit in the background slowing the machine down.

   yes, they work. Tea timer is a realtime registry scanning tool which comes with spybot search and destroy and prevents any registry changes. It lets you know exactly what program is accessing your registry, what change is being made, and let’s you decide to accept or deny the change. You can also create a registry backup and restore your registry if need be. Spybot search and destroy is a cleaner for many adware and spyware programs including registry problems. Yes, it is free also. Registry mechanic is good also and does a deeper scan on your registry, but it is just a scanner and will cost you money for the full version. It is well worth it.
