I used to use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) which is free.
However, it doesn’t have any sort of backup facility which meant that one day, it deleted the wrong registry file and made my computer unable to boot up. I took it to the computer repair store and they wanted $150 to fix it
I now use a cleaner called "RegAce" because it’s easy to use and has a complete backup system which even makes a restore point on your computer. You can read about it here: http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/regace_review.html
Free registry cleaner that I really like is CCleaner
http://www.piriform.com/
and Easy Cleaner.
http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/files/EClea2_0.exe
They are both totally free. But I do like CCleaner more though as it offers more features and gives more solid design.
And yes you are right, don’t trust any registry cleaner that says it free while actually it only offers you free scanning. Lots of this kind of product are scare-ware. They will inform that you got so many errors that it will have problems soon if you don’t fix it with their product of course. One of the nastiest yet popular misleading software is Perfect Optimizer. There is a good article about it here:
http://www.scribd.com/doc/17699592/Perfect-Optimizer-Review
And what ironic is that this software is the clone of FixTool which is listed as a misleading application in Symantec online threat list database. Oh man very nasty.
Use CCleaner. This programs is free.
always create a system restore point first
try Auslogics registry cleaner

or Tweaknow Regcleaner

both free – both safe
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner is very good. I’ve used it for years.
It will give you an opportunity to give a donation when you start the program but you can just click "Skip" and continue using it for free.
Get it at http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
Proper cleaning of your Windows registry with a program that fixes registry issues will speed your computer.
Do not listen to guy who says it is harmful.
CCleaner is free and will clean your registry and PC, not much can fix it for you though i’m afraid.
Fixing your registry will be harder as some files may need replacing if corrupt or damaged, you may be able to use your system restore to fix this, but often that does not work. I have found it can be easier sometimes to format your HD and do a clean reinstallation of operating system etc if things have got that bad.
Eusing Free Registry Cleaner is one of those free registry cleaners.
You can get it from here:
http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleaner/registry_cleaner.htm
Here are your choices:

Wise Disk Cleaner is a free disk utility designed to help you keep your disk clean by deleting any unnecessary files. Usually, these unnecessary, or junk files appear as a result of program’s incomplete uninstalls, or Temporary Internet Files. It is best if these files are wiped out from time to time, since they may, at some point, use a considerable amount of space on your drives. Wise Disk Cleaner, with its intuitive and easy to use interface, helps you quickly wipe out all the junk files. Using the program is indeed easy. It also works fast when both scanning for files and deleting files.

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system – allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.
Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it’s fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

and the best part is by default it prompts you to back up your registry before it scans and fixes so if it messes up you can restore the registry
