You need your registry files cleaned, cut off any unused start up programs, defragment and condense files to save space,a good anti- spy and anti -virus program that grabs and quarantines or destroys unwanted invaders into your computer in real time, make sure you have your drivers updated, empty your temporary files, history and cookies(save favorites) after you go through each part restart and reboot your computer.YOU of course can type in any of these subjects in your browser and get a wide range of choices http://www.microsoft.com is recommended because they can tell you best which of these works best for XP since they created it.Some freeware is good but use caution like with all programs always make sure they are compatible with XP.

Have a anti virus cd run on it every week. Don’t download from sites which you don’t know about. Maybe it needs an update.
Clean out your hard drive.
Hi,
please do this first :-
download CCleaner, install it and then run it, this will safely delete all your temp files etc for you, then reboot back into safe mode again (press F8 as it boots up) and defrag your hard drive to get all your free space back again, i think your system is full of rubbish and just needs a good cleanup.
CCleaner will also clean your reg files correctly as well, but please remember to reboot between doing a disc cleanup and a reg cleanup.
Defaggler will defrag your drive quickly and cleanly.
this will help you, (i promise).

http://www.defraggler.com/download
this is a completely FREE download and will not harm your system at all.
This will clear all your history and cookies from your system cleanly.
You are in need of a bit of "Spring Cleaning"
– First of all, delete the files, cookies, and history from Internet Explorer.
Right click on your Internet Explorer Icon
Click Properties
Click Delete
Next Click "Delete Files", "Delete Cookies", and "Delete History"
Take care NOT to delete Passwords or Forms.
– Now delete all your temporary files.
Click Start
Click Run
type in %temp% and click OK
Click Edit and Select All
Click File and Delete
– Next De-fragment your hard drive.
Click: Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Defragmenter
De-fragment your Hard Drive
Reboot your computer and Defragment a Second time
– Finally run a scan for viruses, malware, adware, and to clean up your registry.
Go to Microsoft web site and run this free scan:

You should see a marked improvement in your speed.
– One more thing that can improve the performance of your machine is to modify the startup routine.
Click: Start – Run and type MSCONFIG and click OK
Click the tab Startup
You will see a bunch of programs that start when you machine is turned on. In most cases, only a few of the programs are necessary for your computer to operate correctly. You should not, however, uncheck them randomly without consulting someone who knows about their purpose. The problem is that all these programs are running in the background stealing processor speed and using memory. Over time more and more programs get added to this startup list.
