ccleaner is a good free registry cleaner
CCleaner is the best free registry cleaner out there, however to really get the job done, I would recommend a product called RegCure, which is made by ParetoLogic. I have used this software for a few months now and it has worked wonders for my PC performance. You can find a detailed registry cleaner comparison of the best registry cleaners at http://www.pc-registry-repair.com/
Good Luck!

Before you play with the registry, make a backup.
Start > Run > Regedit. Once Regedit opens, File > Export.
Use a file name in the format: Reg12345.reg (8characters with .reg extension).
Also, the simple way to disable startup items is:
Start > Run > MsConfig. You can uncheck programs and SERVICES which autoload.
Many speed problems are corrected by cleaning the TEMP or TMP directory or changing the Virtual Memory settings.
Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Performance settings > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory change.
Also, remove deleted large files from the Trash Can.
CCleaner Only Cleans A Small Part Of Your Registry.
