First, the two people who answered above me don’t know what they’re talking about they are not sake oil and it’s very important to keep your registry clean. I can give you a real long explanation if you want. But, since you’re asking where to get one…
I downloaded some from CNET at http://www.download.com. It’s a very reputable website (I think CBS or something owns it/just bought it whatever) and there are reviews, ratings, etc. on everything.
Ccleaner is the most popular. I use it but sometimes it cleans a little too much…although you can pick and choose..
Every registry cleaner will give you different results.
I have (which I got from http://www.download.com):
Garysoft
Wise
Ccleaner
shoot one more and I forgot what it was…I think Free Registry Defrag..
I’ve had these for over six months. I can guarantee you there are no viruses, adware or anything like that.
But I clean my registry regularly. If you get a lot of computer errors it can be from your registry. Whenever you install something, unstinall something, run a program, go on the internet, things get recorded in your registry. It can leave “orphan” files or conflicting files that begin crossing into each other and it takes longer for your machine to process everything – or it freezes – or you get a computer error.
I install and uninstall a lot of programs. (I”m am addict for free downloads). The first time I ran it after not running one for a couples years I had over 1000 files to clean. It made a difference after. Now I just get less than fifty at a time if I run it once a month. (They’re usually “empty files” that are left after a program is uninstalled on a machine.)
The first time you do it it will take a while..but after that it doesn’t take long at all..I run all four for the heck of it and they come up with different registry errors. You can choose to delete or not delete anything. You can run it scheduled or manual.
I’m pretty sure Ccleaner is supposed to be top of the line..but I have to look over the options I chose cause I think I have it set to clean toooo much…
Anyhow, the ones I listed are all safe and all good. (Well, if you download them from http://www.download.com they are…not sure about other websites!)
This isn’t exactly a registry “cleaner” but it is a mass search and replace registry editor, it’s called Resplendent Registrar. I have used it on an off for years and it is absolutely indispensable.
CCleaner all the way!
1st “Registry cleaners” are pretty much snake-oil.
2nd if you are just looking to clean up old un-used registry entries ccleaner from http://ccleaner.com is free and does as good of a job as any other.
If you have a really old system that has been used a lot, and not enough memory and are trying to shave a couple of megabytes of memory off your system in a desperate attempt to make your system run a little faster it might help a *little* but on an otherwise decent system, they are really useless. If you have actual registry “Errors” nothing is going to solve them, back up your data and re-install windows.
No such animal. They are in business to make money. So you can use the "free" one once or twice to fix a few problems but you have to pay to use to fix everytning.
What I do is format and reinstall my OS once or twice a year That cleans up my registry quite well.
