Beware of REGISTRY CLEANERS. Most are commonly spyware in disguise. If you get a pop up that states that your computer is running slow, etc and you should run this incredible registry cleaner – DO NOT do it. It, in itself, is spam and you can get a trojan or zlob add-in that will take over
Today these programs are safe to use. I’ve using them for years now.. But when a program just won’t uni-install these programs can clean up the registry when you remove the software by yourself by deleting the folder where it is.
You would be suprise to learn how many junk entries are in registry gets so fat in size because everytime you access files, delete. install an etc that registry files grows. There a bad links and other things in there that shouldn’t be there.
When a program won’t un-install I use ccleaner to rename the program to x then I delete. Go an delete the folder manaully. Then I use either ccleaner or PC Tools above to completely remove everything in the registry.
If you don’t know what you are doing in Windows Registry you must be careful and always take backup before changing anything.
You don’t need to buy one.

CCleaner is a freeware PC optimization tool.
It combines a system cleaner that removes unused and temporary files from your system and also a fully featured registry cleaner!
CCleaner allows Windows to run faster, more efficiently and gives you more hard disk space.
The best part is that it’s Small, Fast and Free!
Unless you understand the registry and what these "registry cleaners" do, and are willing to loose everything stay away from them.
Often these devices are in fact a way for unethical hackers to gain access to your machine, place other bugs onto your system which come alive at a future date and then they offer a solution to the problem (which they created but don’t tell you they created) for an added fee.
I would not recommend you use them. If a registry cleaning is needed, get someone who is very well versed to do this. An alternative is to reformat the hard drive and I often do that instead should such drastic steps be needed.
The best thing to do to clean the registry is
Start >>>> Run >>>> type in "RegEdit"
then highlight everything on the left side panel
hit the delete key
click on Yes
close the regedit window
reboot
I guess it depends on the registry cleaner you use. Yes, if the wrong thing is deleted then it’ll result in permanent damage. Some registry cleaners are fake and might damage your PC, while others might delete programs that you still need. Not all registry cleaners cost money though. If you clean out your registry, make a backup.
If your an extremely advanced computer user, a registry cleaner is fine. You will know and recognize what files are ok to clean/delete, and what you should not.
If your not, then stay out of the registry. You can delete & change files there that can do damage.
Registry Cleaners are a waste of money. They can and do remove vital entries your PC requires.
Spend the few extra dollars and take it to an independent computer repair shop. If you do decide to play with it yourself, suggest you do your research and ALWAYS make a backup of your registry before proceeding, otherwise you can have the most expensive paperweight in your neighborhood.
If you follow KaptKos entry you will have a paperweight.
