I am selling my computer and I want to make sure that everything is wiped clean before I sell it. How can I totally delete everything to what it was when I bought it? Do I need to buy something or is there a free program that will delete everything? I just want to make sure that nobody can get any of my personal info from it.

killdisk.that thing wipes everything.
Use CCleaner and even if you sell it to the FBI no one will know who owned it before. You can wipe the info up to 35 times rendering all deleted files useless. You set it up in the Advanced settings.
It is unnecessary to reinstall Windows.
with your os cd on, uninstall yer os. Then, delete everything extra if any
..Just back up yer beloved files [pics, memories…]
Well if it is a vista laptop that comes with vista you can wipe it out with the vista disk its very easy all you need is the disk, and the product key which should be underneath your laptop if you have one or beside some where your desktop now you got these 2 items shut your pc down turn it back on keep tapping the escape key make sure the vista disk is in the drive before it shuts down 2 things can happen you will A: have a boot menu to either boot from Hard drive or from cd drive Select cd drive or B it will just bring you to "push any key to boot from cd" (this will happen also after you select boot from cd drive) after it will start "loading windows files" after like 5 Min’s of loading you will see the regular windows vista loading that you see then you will see a window just select install now after that it will ask for the product key enter it in then it might ask you" threres a earlier version of windows and will be removed blah blah blah" just select yes there’s steps I don’t need to explain its pretty straight forward your pc will restart many times this is a normal install process after wards your done your pc is wiped out so clean with a fresh start good luck selling it my friend

i highly recommend paying for a new hdd and installing the OS on it because if you have private information on the computer that you have deleted it will still be able to be pulled up and you will have all you information in someone else hands..so go buy a new hdd or sell it with out one. that’s my recommendation……..and trust me that reformatting or using some program to permanently delete it will not help because no matter what you do it can still be pulled up by a person that knows how to do it……..like me
just re install your windows and there it will ask to format your pc. and also you can delete any partitions if you had in your hard drive. You need to boot in your windows CD to attain this procedure.
Best thing is a coule things like military grade disk wipers. You could use the Emergency CD Repair disk that came with it and reinstall Windows to factory fresh and have wiped the disk. The military grade gives virtually no chance to read anything.
If you have your windows CD google "How to reformat my computer"
I.T expert, You’re so very wrong, If you write a drive to full zero’s the data is forever gone and your little script kiddie tools you got off google will not recover any data.
I think the best way is if you know someone from your friends etc. ask them if they know how to do it because if you are not professional you might delete something that’s really important!
