I have worked on several computers which have been slow. I would use a good safe registry cleaner like easy cleaner, empty the bin and then run a defrag. Also run tune xp

A registry cleaner is used to wipe away your tracks from Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, and Google Chrome from various Windows system areas, and from some third-party applications. Your computer gets slow from different sorts of files and registry gets flooded.
To get rid of such things you can install CCleaner.
Its available free at download.com

Some softwares/applications run when your windows runs. It means that you get unnecessary stuff out of your startup.
Click on start.
Then click on run.
Type in "msconfig".

I had the same problem – Slow computer.
This is what you should do:
Remove all the big files from your desktop and leave just a few shortcuts. If your hard disk is full get yourself an external usb drive and move your movies and songs there. Update your antivirus and antispyware and run a full scan. Then you should defragment your hard disk.
If the problems still persist your computer could be infected or your computer registry could be corrupted. You should get a decent registry cleaner.
A registry cleaner protects your PC from the undesirable processes. Apart from the viruses, there may be quite a few processes running in the computer memory without your knowledge. The results are far from being desirable. Your computer may slow down. Error messages may appear all of a sudden and your anti virus fails to identify the viruses behind them.
