If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don’t always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.
First, if you haven’t cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC’s resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:
1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser
2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".
3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.
4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.
5. Click OK.
3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:
1. Open your Start menu.
2. Click Run
3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"
4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab
5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.
6. Click "OK"
Registry problems cause pc slow down.
Registry Cleaner can fix your pc errors.
Clean windows registry can speed up the computer.
Over time, you install new programs, uninstalled unimportant programs, update software’s, install new devices,
download files from the web, etcetera, hence embarking all records in the registry system.
This is normal, but it is not wise to leave it untouched.
Once in a while, you have to check and remove files that are no longer in use to maintain the speed of your PC.

You can download and scan your computer for free.
You can try the following-
1) Scan for viruses and spyware , I recommend AVG and Spybot. But dont run two AV programs at the same time.
2) Reduce the number of programs loading at startup. Have only the ones absolutely necessary.
3)Uninstall programs you may never need and also run a diskcleanup and chkdsk. CCleaner is a great diskcleanup program, its free.
4) Defragment. Check your HDD free space. The built in defragger needs atleast 15% free space. But better programs like Diskeeper defrag with as less as 5% free space. Whats more, it can be set to run in the background automatically. You can download the free 30 day trial version here-
http://www.diskeeper.com/defrag.aspx
5)Ensure that your PC has enough RAM, if not upgrade. 1 to 2GB is the bare minimum nowadays.
My first guess would be spyware. I deal with systems everyday and have seen these types of malicious spyware bring great computer to a halt. I would start by downloading the program from http://www.malwarebytes.org and running a scan. I’ve been using this software for a few months and it’s saved quite a few customers

If it is XP Select Start in lower left corner of your computer, select All Programs, then select Accessories, then select System tools, select Disk Clean- Up, and run it, it make take awhile. After you are done . Go back to System Tools, and select Disc Defragmenter, run that. Your system should be cleaned up and operating faster again.
If it is Vista select globe in lower left corner search for Disk Clean and use, then search for Defrag and use that.
You don’t need to download anything from anywhere to clean your computer and improve it’s speed, tools are already on your computer.
It may take awhile if you haven’t done this in awhile. I do mine once a week.

Okay, let me start with saying there are a variety of ways to speed up a computer.
These are the main steps you can use:
1. Firstly, there are a couple of very good programs that I advise you download:
Glary Utilites – This has a wide range of tools which are used to speed up your computer, registry defrag, cleaner, temp file remover, history eraser etc, all of which help with performance.
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/glaryutils….
Smart Defrag 1.1 – This helps defragment all of your program files – this makes them open quicker and respond better.
http://download.cnet.com/Smart-Defrag/30…
(All programs here are safe and virus/ad-aware free)
2. Now, make sure you have run anti-virus and anti-spyware tests on your computer, as this could be a source of lower performance. If you don’t have any programs, or aren’t sure about the ones you have, you should download:
AVG 8 – A good free anti-virus
http://free.avg.com/download-avg-anti-vi…
Ad-Aware – Anti-spyware
http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_awar…
Malwarebytes – Another good malware scanner & remover
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
3. Next up, there are several windows tools that can be used to speed up your comp:
Go to start, click my computer, right click on Local (C) drive, click properties, go to tools. Then click on error checking, and click check now. This helps fix problems on your hard drive. NB: This can take a while
Go to start, click run, and then type in msconfig. Click on the start-up tab, and this gives you a list of all the programs that start when you turn on your computer. Turn off (untick) anything that isn’t your anti-virus, anti-spyware, and any other programs you want to start up e.g. maybe MSN Messenger.
4. I would also advise you remove any programs you no longer use, as they can take up a suprising amount of space. Go to control panel, and click add/remove programs. Don’t remove anything you need though.
5. Finally, if your internet browser is experiencing slowness, I advise downloading the latest Mozilla Firefox, and then downloading an add-on called Fasterfox by Spinball. This is an excellent way to surf the web
http://www.mozilla.org/en/firefox
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox…
If none of these steps work, you can try more serious steps. You can try re-formatting your hard-drive to help speed it up. This is a bigger step though, and you will need to go to a professional IT company to get it done. You can also try adding more RAM to your computer, but again talk to an IT expert for details.
These stages should be effective though in speeding up your computer.
Hope this helped

Clean Registry can make computer faster.
The Windows registry, stored on your computer and in several files, records the interaction between hardware, memory space, and addressing. Containing information and settings for all the hardware, software, users, and preferences of your computer, whenever you make a change to the Control Panel settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in the registry. The Windows operating system
continually references this information during its operation.
When the Windows registry becomes very large, your computer’s can become very slow and it can cause it to be unstable. Some computer users will spend a lot of time and effort going through the registry and trying to fix the slow computer manually. Not only can this be a daunting and frustrating task, it is also a very risky one.
