While it is strange that Ubuntu didn’t work on your 5 year old computer it is not unheard of. I couldn’t get any of the *ubuntus to work on my friends computer, which is about 5 years old too, but it did work on my laptop that is 10 years old.
Try using a different Linux distro. PCLinuxOS manged to work on my friends computer just fine.
Here is a small list of non-ubuntu based popular Linux distributions
PClinuxOS

Fedora
http://fedoraproject.org/
openSUSE

Puppy Linux

Debian (not as friendly for new comers)

Hummm… that is odd, it shouldn’t take that long to load the CD. Maybe they CD has been corrupted, you can check on your girlfriends computer by putting the cd in, opening the terminal, and inputting:
cd /media/cdrom
md5sum -c md5sum.txt | grep -v "OK$"
It will take a while, if no errors come up then the CD is fine. (Or I guess you could check the integrity of the disc at the GRUB from the Live CD).
I also recommend that you try Linux Mint 9: http://linuxmint.com/
Also you may need to replace the HDD.
Try making a USB LiveCD disk. It is the same as the CD but on a USB stick. This solved a similar problem for me.
In Ubuntu, go to System > Administration > Startup Disk Creator.
